What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental health problems are common, especially depression, anxiety and misuse of alcohol or drugs. However a great pool of people who are suffering, choose to suffer in silence, not seeking help at all. It is largely due to our social stigma that is associated with mental health. Often, they are ashamed or felt “judged” and therefore they are reluctant to discuss mental health problems with their families, friends or colleagues.
With greater community awareness, people will be able to recognise the problems, know what effective treatments are available and will feel more comfortable seeking professional help. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness, in fact, early detection and treatment will bring a high chance of recovery.
Our Mental Health First Aid (S) Logo
The logo specially chosen and designed to represent Mental Health First Aid Singapore is the water hyacinth. The water hyacinth has been chosen as a symbol of resilience and hope for Mental Health First Aid Singapore. No matter how often it is pushed underwater, the plant will always find its way back to the surface. Easily propagated, water hyacinths can be found commonly floating in many water habitats in Singapore. Hence it also represents the vision of how Mental Health First Aid Singapore will spread the message of transforming stigma and strengthening individuals through mental health literacy.
